All This Can Happen (2012)
Directed by Siobhan Davies and David Hinton
Running time: 50 minutes
All This Can Happen is a collaborative film project between choreographer Siobhan Davies and documentary film director David Hinton. Composed entirely from archive footage of the first photographic and cinematic observations of movement, it’s loosely structured on a turn of the century novella called The Walk by Robert Walser, the story of a man’s walk from city to countryside. Narrated by the actor John Heffernan and using a specially commissioned score, Davies and Hinton use juxtaposing images at varying speeds and densities to convey the walker’s state of mind, resulting in a flickering sequence of imagery that aims to deconstruct movement, visually, through the repetition and freezing of an action. The project was inspired, in part, by the work of 19th century scientist Étienne-Jules Marey who was one of the earliest recorders of movement. Like Marey’s experiments where everyday actions such as walking, running or jumping were photographed to make a continuous series of short frames, in All This Can Happen short sequences of movement are cut to single or multiple frames to allow the viewer to see what is normally invisible. “We want to show how observation and fantasy, memory and speculation can all co-exist in the same mind at the same time, so that we create a ‘psychological 3D’ or ‘cubist’ portrait of a mind.” Hinton has said.
